A fragile label has one job and a short window to do it: it must still be readable when the parcel reaches the sorting hub, after handling, stacking and possibly rain. Most failures are not printing failures — they are adhesive failures on dusty recycled board, or a label placed where a strap or a corner will rub it off.
The material and the placement matter more than the artwork. A bold red border helps a human notice the parcel; only the right adhesive keeps it there.
What the label has to survive
Shipping labels face abrasion from conveyor belts, compression from stacking, and moisture from transit and cold rooms. A paper fragile label with a standard permanent adhesive will often survive a dry, short domestic journey; it will scuff and lift on a long international route or on a damp pallet. A synthetic PP or PET label resists water and tearing and keeps its colour, which is why export and cold-chain shipments usually specify film.
Adhesive on real boxes, not test panels
Recycled corrugated board is dusty, rough and sometimes coated, and it is the surface most likely to cause a label to lift at the edges. A high-tack permanent acrylic or a rubber-based adhesive formulated for rough board performs better than a general-purpose adhesive. In cold stores, the adhesive must remain tacky at low temperature; applying a standard label to a frozen carton is a common cause of immediate failure. Where the box may be reused or the label removed, specify removable adhesive and accept a shorter shelf life.
Symbols, wording and compliance
Handling symbols should follow the ISO 780 pictogram set — the broken-glass symbol for fragile, arrows for this-way-up, a glass for keep-dry. Pair the symbol with the word 'FRAGILE' in the destination language if the parcel crosses borders. Keep the barcode clear of the handling block: a fragile label placed over a barcode can make the parcel unsortable. Size matters too — a label that is too small to read at arm's length in a sorting hub is decorative rather than functional.
Placement and ordering
Apply on a flat face, not across an edge, seam or strap line, and avoid areas that will rub against other parcels. Press firmly from the centre outwards to push air out. When ordering, specify the carton surface, the transit conditions, whether the label is applied by hand or automatically, and the required symbol set. Pre-printed rolls save time; blank rolls with a thermal printer suit variable consignments.

FAQ
Paper or synthetic for fragile labels?
Paper suits dry domestic shipments and short transit. Synthetic PP or PET is the better choice for export, cold chain, damp conditions or anything that will be handled repeatedly.
Why do fragile labels peel off cardboard?
Usually dust and surface roughness on recycled board, or an adhesive that is too soft for the board and the temperature. A high-tack adhesive and firm application pressure fix most cases.
Can fragile and barcode be on the same label?
Yes, if the layout keeps the symbol and the code separate and the code retains its quiet zone. Many operations use a combined label to avoid two application steps.
