Packaging Labels: Stock, Adhesive and Print Method for Cartons and Pouches

A packaging label has to do two jobs at once: carry the brand, and carry the data — barcode, lot, best-before, weight. Those jobs often want different materials, which is why packaging labels fail more often from the wrong adhesive than from bad printing.

This page covers the four decisions that determine whether a label stays on the box: substrate, adhesive, print method and format.

Substrate: paper or film

Coated paper is the default for cartons and dry goods. It takes flexo, offset and digital print well, holds varnish and foil, and is the cheapest way to get a rich brand panel. PP film is chosen where the pack will be chilled, handled with wet or oily hands, or where the label must resist scuffing on a shelf. On pouches and squeezable packs, film also conforms instead of creasing. A hybrid construction — paper face with a filmic feel — is common on premium retail boxes.

Adhesive: where packaging labels actually fail

Recycled corrugated board is the hardest common surface: it is dusty, fibrous and often coated with a release agent that fights adhesion. A standard permanent adhesive can look fine at packing and lift at the corners a week later. High-tack acrylic is formulated for exactly this. Chilled and frozen packs need an adhesive that stays tacky at low temperature and tolerates condensation during application — a standard grade turns glassy and lets go. Poly bag and PP surfaces are low-surface-energy and need a specific LSE adhesive; the same label on a carton and on a poly mailer will not behave the same way.

Print method follows the run length

Long runs with few variants suit flexo or offset, where plate and setup costs amortise. Variable data — lot codes, serials, dates, barcodes — is printed at application time by thermal transfer, which needs a resin or wax-resin ribbon on a coated or film face. Direct thermal is cheaper and needs no ribbon, but the image fades with heat, light and abrasion, so it rarely belongs on a retail carton. Short-run and multi-SKU work is increasingly digital, which removes plate cost and allows versioning inside one order.

Format, sensor marks and application

Rolls need a gap, notch or black mark that matches the applicator's sensor; a roll with the wrong mark prints blanks or double-feeds. Wind direction must match the machine — an inside-wound roll on an outside-wound printer is unusable. For hand application, sheets or a dispenser are more practical than rolls. Where an applicator is used, label size, liner stiffness and peel angle all affect placement accuracy, and it is worth testing with the real line rather than approving on a bench.

Compliance content you cannot move later

Barcodes need quiet zones and adequate contrast — a dark brand panel behind a barcode is a common cause of scan failure at the till. Lot and date fields need a defined area that does not shift between versions. Recycling and material marks are increasingly required on pack and must be legible at small size. Planning these zones into the artwork is far cheaper than reprinting after a retailer rejection.

FAQ

Why do my labels peel off recycled boxes?

Recycled board is dusty and low-energy at the surface. A high-tack acrylic adhesive, applied with firm roller pressure, usually resolves it. Cleaning the application area also helps.

Paper or film for packaging labels?

Paper for dry cartons and the best print economics. Film for chilled, oily, wet or high-scuff environments, and for squeezable packs.

Can packaging labels carry logos and variable data together?

Yes — pre-print the brand panel by flexo or digital, then overprint lot, date and barcode by thermal transfer at packing.

Do you supply custom shapes?

Yes, with a cutting die. Standard rectangles and circles avoid die cost and shorten lead time.
