PE Coated Paper: Polyethylene Coating for Moisture Barrier and Heat Sealing

PE coated paper is a base paper with a thin extruded polyethylene layer on one or both faces. The coating does two things paper cannot: it blocks water vapour and liquid, and it heat-seals to itself or to film.

That is why it appears in food wraps, cup stock, pouch laminates and industrial interleaving — anywhere paper's printability is wanted but its porosity is not.

What the coating changes

Uncoated paper breathes. A 15–20 gsm LDPE layer reduces water vapour transmission sharply and makes the surface non-absorbent, so liquid sits on top instead of wicking in. The same layer becomes a heat-seal medium: apply heat and pressure and the polyethylene bonds to another PE surface, which is how a paper pouch is closed without adhesive. Coat weight is the dial — light coats give barrier and a sealable surface, heavy coats give a deeper, stronger seal and a more pronounced plastic feel.

One side or two

Single-side coating is the common configuration: one face is sealed or barrier-protected, the other stays printable and grippable. Double-side coating is used where both faces must resist moisture, or where a bag needs to seal on either orientation. On double-coated stock, check which face is intended for printing — a PE surface will not accept water-based ink without treatment, so the print face must be specified at order.

Grades and where they go

Food-contact grades use virgin base paper and food-approved polyethylene, and are specified for direct contact with dry and fatty foods, wraps and cup stock. Industrial grades cover interleaving, release applications, backing sheets and protective facing. Heat-seal strength, coating adhesion and pinholes are the quality variables that matter: a pinhole in a 15 gsm coat is a leak path, and coating that has not bonded properly will delaminate when the pack is peeled open.

Printing and converting

The uncoated face prints by flexo, offset and digital. The coated face needs corona treatment or a primer before ink will anchor. Converting PE coated paper means controlling heat carefully: too much and the coating blocks on the roll, too little and the seal is weak. Rolls should be stored flat, wrapped and away from heat, because polyethylene softens and the layers can fuse under stack pressure in a warm store.

PE coating versus film lamination

An extruded PE layer is thinner and cheaper than a laminated film, and it keeps the structure closer to mono-material, which matters for recycling claims. A laminated structure gives higher barrier, better dimensional stability and a wider seal window. If the requirement is a sealable, moisture-resistant paper for a moderate shelf life, extrusion coating is usually enough; if the pack needs a long barrier life or high seal strength, lamination is the more reliable route.

FAQ

Is PE coated paper recyclable?

It is generally accepted in paper recycling streams at low coat weights, but acceptance varies by region and by mill. Confirm with your local collector before making an on-pack claim.

What is the difference between PE coated and PE laminated paper?

Coating is an extruded polyethylene layer applied directly to the paper; lamination bonds a separate film with adhesive. Lamination gives higher barrier and seal strength at higher cost.

Can PE coated paper be heat sealed?

Yes — that is one of its main functions. The polyethylene layer bonds to another PE surface under heat and pressure.

Which side can be printed?

The uncoated side, unless the coated side has been corona treated or primed. Specify the print face when ordering.
